The crowning achievement of Belgian steam locomotive construction was undoubtedly the powerful Series 1 Pacifics. Between 1935 and 1938, 35 examples were built as 1,001-1,035. Their extremely successful external design clearly characterized their beefy power. They were mostly used in front of the heavy express trains on the Ostend route – Brussels – Liege – Aachen and on the steep route from Brussels via Arlon to Luxembourg City with an average speed of 80 or even 100 km/h. With an output of 3,400 PSi, axle load of 22 t and a top speed of 120 km/h, they were also at the top in an international comparison.
