The 50 series played a key role in eastern Germany for even longer than in the west. In terms of numbers, comparatively few locomotives (354) remained in the Soviet occupation zone at the end of the war. Over time there were different locomotive-tender combinations. After their decommissioning, the new tenders of the 23.10 and 50.40 series were increasingly used behind the old 50. However, because there was no continuous rear wall, this combination was not particularly popular with the staff, especially in winter.
