The 218 series shaped the image of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Bahn in the last five decades like no other diesel locomotive type. From 1971, 398 series locomotives were put into service and used for both passenger and freight trains. They reached a top speed of 140 km/h with an output of 1,840 kW. The 218 series has gone through a number of color variants over time. The first 218s were delivered in the crimson red color scheme that was common for diesel locomotives at the time.
