The castle's multi-faceted building arrangement with an irregular floor plan and an elaborate tiled roof landscape was created through multiple renovations and expansions over the centuries. The inner courtyard with half-timbered elements is surrounded to the north by the high, square main tower with a pent roof and roof turret, to the east the main residential building with a roof terrace and solid natural stone outer wall, to the south the gatehouse with a guard house and a large outside staircase to the castle , a projecting stair tower with a conical roof as well as an extension for park access and, at the southwest end, a battery tower with an attached round tower with a conical roof. The model is equally suitable for installation as a hill castle or a low castle. The castle, which is now used as a museum, is closely linked to the legend of the vampire Count Dracula. According to myths, the historical figure Vlad III, ruler of the Principality of Wallachia at the time and possibly inspiration for Bram Stoker's famous fictional character, used the castle as a residence.
