Years ago the question was asked at Mercedes-Benz , where the journey is headed in the future, gasoline or hydrogen? A research vehicle of a 280 TE from the 123 series was developed for this purpose. The T-model's engine burns a variable mixture of hydrogen gas and gasoline - Both energy sources are fueled and stored separately from each other. Above the rear axle there is a classic 35 liter tank for the liquid fuel and an additional low-temperature metal hybrid storage unit made up of two modules for the hydrogen. In 1984 a fleet test began in Berlin.
