The ÖBB started an upgrade program to renew the double-decker trains (DOSTO) in 2019. This means that around 100 cars will be optimized to modern Cityjet standards by 2023. The modernization includes, among other things, on-board WiFi, new seat covers, multi-purpose areas in each intermediate car with more space for bicycles, strollers and luggage, as well as newly furnished rest areas. In May 2022, halfway through the ongoing DOSTO upgrade program, electric locomotive 1116 181 was painted in the Cityjet design. In this way, the ÖBB is setting an important example for attractive offers in public transport and especially local commuter transport in Lower Austria.
